Read-a-thon Hour 8 UPDATE

Still reading!  Just finished my first book.  I haven’t been reading as fast as I’d hoped, but I’m happy that I finished at least one and will hopefully tick off another before my eyes give out on me!

Hemingway’s Girl by Erika Robuck was a great book.  I’m glad I started out with it as it was interesting, well written and a fast, easy read.

I read it on my iPad via the Kindle app.

Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-Thon

Coles Phillips-001Ahhh, spring.  I adore this time of year with all of its lovely perks – fruit blossoms, flowers growing, warmer weather, the April session of read-a-thon….

I’ve done Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-thon quite a few times now.  I believe this is my 5th, but it might be my 6th.  I enjoy it so much.  It gives me a chance to get caught up on some reading (especially now that I’m WORKING..  woe is me) and the great thing is that my daughters get into it, too.  They are 15 and 11 now, but still interested, maybe mostly in the snacks!  Whatever gets them involved though, right?

snacksSpeaking of snacks…

I went out and bought some snacks today.  Missing from the picture are 8 beautiful palmiers from a French bakery here in town.  I knew if I opened the box, they would get eaten so they shall remain unseen until tomorrow!!  Which is actually today because I wrote this post yesterday but posted it just now..  that makes sense, yes?  :)

Now for the books.  I had a hard time choosing.  There are so many on my TBR list.  I decided to change the format of each book I read to keep it interesting – and to change things up so it doesn’t get monotonous.  On my iPad/Kindle app, I decided on Hemingway’s Girl by Erika Robuck.  I’ve heard it’s really great!  On my NEW Kobo Aura (I got one early for free from Kobo for review – that will be coming soon) I’ll be reading The Queen’s Dollmaker by Christine Trent.  I sounds interesting and has a Marie Antoinette connection so I’m all over that.  As for the actual book I’m going to read, the pick is Rebeckah but Jill Eileen Smith.  I really enjoy Biblical fiction.

I’d love to hear what you’re reading, too!  Share with me :)

INTRODUCTORY QUESTIONNAIRE:

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?  Kelowna, BC, Canada
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?  Can’t pick…  *twitch*
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?  Strawberries… and palmiers!
4) Tell us a little something about yourself!  Mom, wife, Canadian, book junkie, lover of classic Hollywood (Clark Gable is the KING), hockey queen
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? More resting.  Taking breaks is good!

Last Day – Book Drunkard Week Long Read-a-Thon

It’s the last day of the read-a-thon!  How did everyone do?  I didn’t do as well as I wanted.  I finished The Painted Girls and started In Bed With the Tudors.  I doubt I will get it finished today, but I’ll do my best to get as much read as I can.  I’m enjoying the book so far.  I did expect a bit more ‘sex’.  Nothing ‘Shades of Grey’ or anything but so far it’s been more about the food than the bed…  haha :)

I did come to the conclusion that every week this year has been read-a-thon week for me.  I just love to read, adore books and enjoy getting lost in a terrific story.  I can’t wait to share my favourite books of 2012.  That post will come in a few weeks.

I can’t wait to see everyone’s wrap up posts!  Make sure you share your links :)

Day 3 – Book Drunkard Week Long Read-a-Thon

KAY CRAIN-002Day 3 and I’m all geared up for more reading.  I sort of got sucked into a movie this morning (Moneyball – love me some Brad Pitt) and I will be tutoring my nephew in English later, but I think I will still get a lot of reading done.  I’m loving THE PAINTED GIRLS.  I urge you to check it out and buy it.  It’s one of the best books I’ve read so far this year.

If I can finish the book tomorrow – that’s my goal – I will start IN BED WITH THE TUDORS by Amy Licence.  It looks really great and is right up my alley!

Looking forward to your updates!

Day 2 – Book Drunkard Week Long Read-a-Thon

KAY CRAIN-002I didn’t get as much read yesterday as I wanted to – I was so exhausted after cleaning the house and cooking dinner for company that I fell asleep at 8 pm.  So, I only read half of my goal.

Today I plan on doing much better.  Thankfully, the book I decided to read first is amazing so far and I get the feeling it’ll be hard to put down today.  So, barring anything unknown jumping into my schedule today, I should be able to make up some pages today.

http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1352434309l/12991201.jpgSo, a bit about what I’m reading.  THE PAINTED GIRLS by Cathy Marie Buchanan is about the van Goethem sisters, Antoinette, Marie and Charlotte.  The story is inspired by the model of Little Dancer Aged Fourteen by Edgar Degas.  I’m not far into the story yet, but I already know I’m going to love it as much as I loved her first novel, THE DAY THE FALLS STOOD STILL.  If you haven’t read it, do it now!  It was really wonderful.

How is everyone else doing with their goals?  Anyone finish a book yet?

Day 1 – Book Drunkard Week Long Read-a-Thon

http://virginiebarbeau.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/kay-crain-002.jpg?w=153&h=298&h=238Good morning! (Or afternoon depending on where you are reading from today) Welcome to Day 1 of the Book Drunkard Week Long Read-a-Thon!

So, on the dawn of my exciting reading adventure, my husband decided to invite a friend over for supper. Cleaning and cooking are cutting into my reading time!! Sadness…. I will hopefully get in a few hours.

I will post daily updates on each daily post I make so feel free to comment with your own updates or links to your blog, etc. Good luck and have fun!

Book Drunkard Week Long Read-a-Thon

With the end of the year upon us (and coming too quickly, in my opinion!), I looked at my stack of books and decided that there is no better way to make a dent in my TBR pile than to host a read-a-thon!  I will admit, I’ve been a bit in a ‘reading funk’ lately, and I need something to jump start me.

So, it’s pretty simple.  Sign up on this post with the number of books you plan on reading during the week of December 2 – 8.  You can even leave a list of books you’re reading!  If enough people sign up, there will be a prize, so tell your friends!  Leave a link to your read-a-thon blog post (if you have one) but you don’t need one to participate.

The more the merrier!  Let’s get together, cheer each other on and try to read our reading goals before the end of 2012.

Read-A-Thon Hour 19, Mini-Challenge #3

Midnight Book Girl is hosting the mini-challenge this hour and it’s called Book Sentences.  Since I’m not at home where all my books are, this was a tough one!  But, I came up with something from the books my daughters and I brought along with us.

Dark Souls Spellbound Beyond the Grave.  (Sounds more like a book title than a sentence, but I had to go with it!!)

Read-A-Thon Hour 14, UPDATE!

Well, I’ve completed two books so far for a total of 492 pages!  I’m started my third book and, truthfully, I’m fading a bit!  I had a small nap so I’m hoping I’ll be able to get back into it and get several more hours of reading in.

I want to thank everyone who entered my mini-challenge.  I had a great time reading through all the answers!  I will be contacting the winners shortly :)

Here is a mid-event survey:

1) How are you doing? Sleepy? Are your eyes tired?  I had a nap…  I might need some chocolate to keep me going.  Just sayin’….  haha
2) What have you finished reading?  So far I’ve completed Alice Hartley’s Happiness and Snow White and the Huntsman.
3) What is your favorite read so far?  Hmm…  I think the book I’m currently working on will end up being my favourite.
4) What about your favorite snacks? The apples and caramel!  The apples are so juicy.

5) Have you found any new blogs through the readathon? If so, give them some love!  The Day in the Life of a Wilted Girl.  I love her blog!  It looks so much cooler than my blog will ever look!

Dewey’s 24 Hours Read-A-Thon, Hour 7 – Read-A-Thon-A-Crostic

I’m Martina aka Book Drunkard and I will be hosting a mini-challenge for you!

Hour 7!  I hope you’re all still going strong.  I’m sure you are – it’s hard to keep a good reader down!  If you need a quick break in your day, how about a mini-challenge?

If you participated in the Read-a-thon in April, you might remember my mini-challenge, Read-A-Thon-A-Crostic.  I created my own here just to give you an idea.  Because I love books so much, I used the word “HEART”.

The same rules apply:  It’s simple – take the title of your current book or a book you’ve already finished today and create an Acrostic.  It can be words that describe the book, you can make it into a poem, whatever you want!  You can post it here in comments OR do up a blog post.  Just remember to leave the link so everyone can check it out.  Be creative and have fun!  (If your book title is totally HUGE, you can just use the first letter of each word.  I’m easy! (just not cheap..))

You might like to know about the prize, eh?  (Yes, I’m Canadian!)  The winner of Read-A-Thon-A-Crostic will win the book of their choice up to $10 from Book Depository.  Second place will receive a collection of book marks.  First place will be chosen my me and by read-a-thon partner, my 11 year old daughter, Brooklyn.  Second place will be determined by Random.org.  Open internationally!  You have 3 hours until the winners are chosen.  I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!
