There isn’t much mention of Rahab in the Bible. We know she was a Caananite, was referred to as a harlot and that she played a role in helping Israel conquer Jericho. In THIS SCARLET CORD, Joan Wolf writes about what her life might have been like – her childhood and the events leading up to the Israelite conquest and how her faith changed her life and perhaps the course of history.
I really enjoyed reading about the pagan rituals of Baal and the ancient beliefs of Israel. The two religions are so completely different and I loved learning about them. Joan Wolf wrote it all in a really interesting way and seems to have done a lot of research on the subject.
While most of the story is imagined, it’s completely plausible. I like the fact that she didn’t over do Rahab’s story, or make it completely unbelievable the way some writers of Biblical fiction have a tendency to do. Instead, it was just a beautiful story about a beautiful girl with a hard life who had huge amounts of faith and became a huge inspiration to me.
