If you haven’t read REVOLUTION by Jennifer Donnelly, I either feel really sorry for you because you haven’t experienced it yet or I’m really excited for you because you haven’t experienced it yet! The book is huge at nearly 500 pages, but I gobbled up each and every word in only a few days.
Set during the modern age and the time of the French Revolution, this YA novel tells the story of two girls – one is dealing with the passing of her brother, the other is trying to save a dauphin from certain death. The mixing of well-known people from history and made-up characters combined with the moving back and back and forth in time is well done and written in such a way as to not confuse the reader. While reading Andie’s story, I couldn’t wait to get back to Alexandrine (whose story is being read by Andie via an old diary she finds) – and vice versa. I was so emerged in both their lives, I read to the point of exhaustion trying to find out what would happen next. I’m not ashamed to admit I had a nice long nap the day after completing the book!
The vividness of the descriptions of the places Andie and Alex were, are stunningly written . And the emotions! Sadness, happiness, madness – it was as if I was living vicariously through them, which could be quite scary at times. Have you ever found yourself holding your breath while reading a book?? (I’m guilty!) It’s just that captivating. If you haven’t read it yet, you quite simply must.
So, you’ve read my review and now you really, REALLY want to read the book right? Well, guess what? You can! Jennifer Donnelly has awesomely offered up a signed and personalized hardcover copy of REV for one lucky person!

Two girls, two centuries apart. One never knowing the other. But when Andi finds Alexandrine’s diary, she recognizes something in her words and is moved to the point of obsession. There’s comfort and distraction for Andi in the journal’s antique pages—until, on a midnight journey through the catacombs of Paris, Alexandrine’s words transcend paper and time, and the past becomes suddenly, terrifyingly present.
